We are taught by the kabbalists that Shavuot is the day when the totality of Heaven is open to us. It is the day when the Energy, Light, and Wisdom of the Creator manifest in their full form. It is a day of a spiritual unification—a wedding between the Creator of the world and the people whose consciousness and physicality are now ready to receive the full beneficence of the Lightforce of God. The past seven weeks of the Omer, each with its own challenges and spiritual opportunities, have brought us through a process of spiritual refinement in preparation for this powerful connection. The number seven, representing Divine perfection and order, is a clue to our understanding that during these seven weeks, we have steadily expanded our capacity to receive the very Light we could not contain during Pesach. In the Midrash, we learn that during the night of Shavuot, the Israelites slept, rather than remaining awake in prayer. They thought that perhaps their unconscious, sleeping mind could retain more than it could when they were awake. But as it turned out, this decision to sleep was a mistake, and that is why we stay up all night—to correct the error of our former consciousness as the generation of the Israelites at Sinai. Kabbalah teaches us that the goal of a spiritual life is to develop a consciousness that is awake and engaged at all times, a consciousness that is always aware of the Light of the Creator in all things. The wisdom and knowledge we receive on Shavuot is imbued into our alert mind and body, into our complete being, where it can infuse us with the ability to stay in connection with the Light for the remainder of the year. As we readied our vessel these past seven weeks of the Omer, we revealed to the Creator that our fortified form was now ready to contain all the blessings that the Light wants to bestow upon us.
