The Hebrew word for one, echad, has the numerical value of 13. So, too, do the Hebrew words for love and care. Therefore, to become one with another, we must have love and care for the other person. If we can't care, we don't have love. The opposite is also true: If we don't love, we can't care. To care for someone is to want to feel closeness with that person. We are saying, "I want this person to be a part of me; therefore, I should try my best to relate to him--in his language, on his level." When we are coming from this type of consciousness, we show how much we care. To be caring is to create unity, but in order to accomplish this Oneness, we must be prepared to give up our desired level of comfort to create a bridge between us and the other person. If we are unable to bridge the gap--if we can't move outside of ourselves and see the other person's needs--then it isn't love. |
