Growing Our Spirituality (KB)

People misuse the word “spiritual” all the time. People believe that achieving spirituality is what we do when we sit down with a book and learn all day. So let me tell you a story here about a master who needed—no, craved—to be close to God. He finds the highest mountain that he can, and then he climbs and climbs and climbs until he eventually reaches the mountain’s summit in among the clouds. Standing there, he screams out, “God, where are You? Where are You?” Suddenly from far below, he hears a Voice that says, ”I am here. “The master looks around, confused, and asks, ”Where? “And the Voice replies, ”I am here among the people! You’ve gone in the wrong direction.”

Spirituality isn’t something that we take out of a book. Yes, we read, we learn, we have tools. We have a way to get there. We open the Zohar, scan its holy letters with our eyes, and draw Energy from it. But what do we do with that Energy? Where do we put it? Do we take it and close the book and say, ”I learned something today”? Or do we go out and find a way to give of ourselves?

Spirituality is when we walk the walk, not just talk the talk. Spirituality is the becoming the best person we can be. Spirituality is being there for others; it is our ability to open our arms, to hug and to love. This is spirituality. If we don’t have this, then right now is a really good time to try to find some of it because this is when we need spirituality the most.
