In biblical times, the Israelites would bless the new moon by sending two witnesses out to look for it. If the two witnesses didn’t return to attest that they had indeed seen the waxing crescent moon, it was declared that the new moon hadn’t yet appeared. The “existence” of the new moon therefore depended on the declaration of the witnesses and not the other way around. This seemingly small detail gives us an important message, especially in these chaotic times. The life we live, the air we breathe, the food we eat is not governed by some Force outside of ourselves, but by us, by you and me. Fire and brimstone of seeming biblical proportion might occur through a volcano, through a tsunami, through a hurricane, through any number of different violent acts of nature. But the reason those destructive acts of nature occur isn’t because of some freak accident. It is because we human beings—billions of us cumulatively—have drawn down negative energy from the cosmos, and the universe has reacted by creating negativity in the environment. Mother Nature’s turbulence does not come from Above. Instead, as we’ve learned and studied over and over, we are responsible in many different ways for what happens to us and around us. But because we are responsible, we also have the power to create change for ourselves and for the world. How does this change come about? It is through our kindness, through our love, through our care, and through our ability to transform that which is dark into Light. |
